I love the sessions where the baby will let me get through loads of poses and seems very content. This little guy did not disappoint. He was good on his belly and his back, with a wrap, without a wrap. Of course, most newborn sessions are very similar as I have my ways, but this fella was snoozing the entire time. Such a great newborn session!! Here are a few things to keep in mind for learning newborn photography –
Timing is everything when it comes to taking newborn photos. Ideally, you’ll want to book your session between 5 and 14 days after baby is born. The youngest are often sleepy and more cooperative for photography sessions. Newborns usually like to start stretching out more around the three-week-old point and tend to have longer alert periods. Avoid scheduling too late in the day, as babies tend to be fussier during this time period.
Incorporate props and accessories into your newborn photography session! Whether you bring along a sentimental blanket, hat, or wrap; these elements add personality and charm to the photos. Depending on your style, delicate touches add to the beauty of the session. Be sure to coordinate colors and tones with your photographer.
Keep your newborn baby comfortable during the session by setting the room temperature and lighting accordingly. To achieve this, make sure the room is warm enough that your newborn isn’t at risk of being too cold. Additionally, depending on the level of natural light in the room, you may need to set up some soft photography lights or use a reflector to capture those beautiful images.
Be creative and find unique ways to capture your newborn’s beauty. From traditional poses to more expressive shots, you can capture a range of emotions that best define the personality of your little one. If your baby is feeling sleepy and relaxed, use props and blankets to create a cozy setup, then take close-up shots. On the other hand, if the baby is alert and active, have them move around to create even more emotive images. Most newborns will give you a sweet little smile after a full belly feed. So precious!
Finding the right newborn photographer is essential to ensure that you capture your details of your baby in the highest of quality. Make sure to do your research and look at many portfolios before hiring a photographer, so that you are aware of their standard of work. Additionally, make sure they have extensive experience working with newborns and make sure to ask them questions about their style and practice.
