Donut Smash | One Year Old Baby Pictures

More often than you think, cake smashes don’t go quite as planned. Although we know how delicious birthday cake is, most babies have never seen one before! The swirls of brightly-colored icing can seem a little daunting. When we place that delectable cake in front of them, many babies look up with confused faces as if to say, “What in the world am I supposed to do with this thing?” Can you imagine someone putting something completely foreign and bizarre looking in front of you and telling you, “Go ahead! Eat it!” I would be a more than a little hesitant, too!

Needless to say, this baby did not like cake at all for his cake smash session. So, we opted for something less terrifying: a donut smash! For this happy one year old, the glazed circles covered in sprinkles were more his style – well, mostly just the sprinkles. He adorably analyzed the small tower of donuts and delicately pulled off one colorful sprinkle after another. His facial expressions were priceless. It’s funny to see toddlers’ personalities come out in the way they approach new things. Some dive right in, eager to taste, touch, and smell (I’ve even seen a baby adorably kiss her cake!). Meanwhile, others carefully scrutinize the thing a while before tasting. This handsome birthday boy fell into the second category. What a clever guy. I think he will be an inquisitive one as he grows up!

I had so much fun capturing portraits for this epic milestone year. Even though he may not remember it, these photos reveal such a special time in this family’s life as their little one finished his first twelve months of life. Now, he’ll be on to bigger and better adventures. Happy birthday to this cutie! May his year be filled with even more new discoveries than the last!
