As a new parent, it is natural to feel a bit “in the dark” about what actually happens at a newborn baby photography session. The more you know prior to walking into your session, the better you will feel about the process. Newborn photographers know that if the parents are calm and confident, the photo shoot is likely to run as smoothly as possible. Though you may be familiar with traditional photography shoots, there are a few things that are a bit different when it comes to snapping photos of a newborn baby. Here are a few things you might not be expecting in your first newborn photography session.
Newborns are still used to the temperatures of the womb, so they are most comfortable in the warmer air. Coupled with the fact that many shots will be taken with your little one without warm blankets or clothing, it is important that the studio stays warm. While it certainly won’t be like a sauna, be prepared for our studio to be warm and cozy.
We aren’t talking about jackhammers and shouting, but the womb is surprisingly noisy. To recreate their natural, noisy environment, photographers will sometimes use a noise machine. Soothing sounds like ocean waves or just plain white noise will often calm a newborn baby and makes for an easy photo shoot.
The best photos are often captured while the baby is asleep. Unlike sessions with adults or older children, during newborn sessions the subject is usually asleep. It is easy to position a deeply sleeping baby and, let’s face it, sleeping newborns look like little angels. To really capture the innocence of your little one, photographers usually prefer if the baby is asleep.
Babies will be babies. As you are probably aware of by now, it seems that when the diapers are removed the flood gates open. Newborn photographers are used to messes and come prepared. Don’t worry or stress out if your baby has an accident during the session. A little mess has never stopped us from having a great photo shoot.
Taking your baby in for a photo session for the first time can be stressful. There are a few things you may not expect. Communicate with your photographer early and often so you can be prepared as possible.
