No matter how prepared we are or how much you’ve planned, you know by now that newborn babies have a mind of their own. It is natural, every once in a while, for a baby to simply not be in the mood to have his or her portrait taken. If is seems like things aren’t going smoothly, here are a few things you as a parent can do to bring everyone involved back into a better space.
First and foremost, put yourself in a calm state of mind. Babies can sense when their mothers are anxious, and will also begin to panic. Let your photographer know that you need a moment. It can seem impossible to calm down when your baby is upset, but the more level-headed you are the better your little one will react. Do not be afraid to ask for a break if you need one. We are here to cater to your needs and the needs of your new arrival, so remember to make yourself a priority.
When you have calmed down, sooth your baby in the way that feels most natural to you. Use a calm, level voice and make sure your body language is comforting and calming. If there is someone else in the room that is causing stress or behaving in an anxious manner, do not be afraid to politely ask them to step away from the situation as well.
If, after feeding and soothing your child, he or she is still very fussy, you may want to consider leaving the room for a moment. Babies can smell their mothers and may continue to fuss if they know you are just within arms reach. Let Daddy take over for a moment and see if removing yourself as a factor improves the situation.
Ask the photographer to try a new pose or position. While no pose should be painful or uncomfortable for the baby, sometimes there is just something about the composition that is upsetting the child. If the baby is posing with a prop, try a different toy or blanket.
Take a break. If all else fails, stop the session for a moment. Sessions will be scheduled with plenty of time for breaks and for soothing an upset child. Feed and cuddle your baby to bring them back to a manageable level. You know what is best for your little one, and once everyone is calm, we are happy to pick up where we left off.
