Are you a mommy or daddy looking for a newborn twin photographer in Austin, Texas, or a photographer who wants to learn more about newborn twin photography? Silver Bee Photography can help with both!
I get asked all the time how to achieve adorable twin images, and to be honest, it’s not as easy as the photos make it look. Every newborn is different, including twins, and in these sessions, it is almost guaranteed that each baby will have a different temperament. This makes for a lot of planning and soothing. It can be a challenge for sure. However, with my simple tips, you can have a great session and produce photographs that parents will fawn over again and again.
Safety and comfort are the most important things when it comes to newborn twin photography sessions. The usual techniques that apply to newborns apply to twins as well. Keep the studio warm, use white noise, and photograph them with a full belly.
Twins tend to be born early and because of this can be tinier than other newborns. It’s extra important to handle them delicately and to keep the studio warm, especially if you are photographing them in their birthday suits.
Before the shoot ask Mom what each of her baby’s temperaments are like. Pose the tougher twin first and add the calmer twin later.
While Mom is feeding one twin, take the opportunity to photograph the other twin alone. It works great to start with photographing one baby and then adding the other for the sibling shots. It will also maximize your time. Mom and Dad love to see all the tiny special details inherent in each baby, so make sure to capture that birthmark or signature sleepy face.
Parents will want solo pictures of each baby, but they will really cherish the photos of the twins together. The more snuggly the better! I find that twins respond very well to being wrapped and photographed very close. After all, they have spent the last 8-9 months sharing a very small.
Make sure both babies have been recently fed, and wait for them to be in a deep sleep. Wraps can help keep legs tucked in where you want them, and prevent any unintentional face palming.
A second option for photos together is the “stacked” shot. In this pose, both babies lay on their tummies one on top of the other. Make sure both babies have their faces facing forward to capture all those intricate details.
Prop shots are also excellent, and can be an easy way to pose the babies. Place the newborn twins on their backs in a crate, bowl, or basket. Then, intertwine their arms and legs together. If they are good and sleepy, they will be more than comfortable with this.
Don’t fret if a pose doesn’t happen; it’s always worth trying. I try to photograph with the least amount of interference. Usually, twins will snuggle right up to each other on their own anyway, making for more natural-looking shots.
When you’re dealing with two newborns, it’s important to take your time. If you try to cram both babies in a single baby time frame, you will likely be faced with two fussy uncooperative babies. The more time you spend soothing and comforting the twins, the greater success you will have during your shoot.
With twice the babies you’re going to need twice the hands. Mom might not be available to help at all times, due to feedings, so be sure to have a backup. This can be Dad, Grandma, a friend, or someone that you bring along yourself. Whoever they are make sure you prep them beforehand on where you want them and what you need them to do.
With this job it is easy to have fun. While photographing twins can be twice as challenging it can also be twice as rewarding. So relax, remain patient, and enjoy this unique experience.
